 • PROJECTS - From prison to kindergarten

In 18-22 May, 2009, Humanitarian Foundation “Rescue”, participated at the second meeting of the transnational project -H. A. N. D. L. E. -Grundtvig Learning Partnership Project, that took place in Lithuania, Siauliai. The parts of this project are 4 partner countries: Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and Romania united to fulfill 4 main objectives:

  1. implementing some rehabilitation strategies for the inmates
  2. helping the inmates to have an active life after detention: professionally (getting a job), socially (being reintegrated in the society) and personally (having a family).
  3. Finding the best practices of rehabilitating the inmates
  4. developing a good cooperation between the penitentiary system and the labor market, employers and NGOs in order to facilitate the social reintegration of the inmates.
The goal of this mobility was to discuss the work methodology used by every country regarding a better reintegration in the society of the inmates.

“Rescue” team had 8 members: the manager-Giurgiu Cosmin Ioan, the physiologist-Nistor Horea and the assistant manager-Ilies Adriana, also 2 persons from Gherla Penitentiary directly involved in this project and 3 active volunteers from “Rescue”.

At the first meeting each country had the opportunity to present their team members and their role in the project, after that it was presented the Samarija organization, whose mission is to reintegrate in the society the ex-inmates who don't have any place to stay and no possibility to find a job. Another group of persons that is helped by this organization are the orphans children and the disadvantaged families. We also visited Charity and Support Foundation “Agapao”, where we could meet the members of this foundation and the persons involved in the rehabilitation program. This foundation offers a shelter to the ex-inmates and to the persons that used to take drugs and who want to change their life. Besides the psychological programs, this foundation organizes also Christian programs.

The rehabilitation process is based upon the “12 steps” program which has 4 main periods: in the first period the person involved in the program don't have the possibility to relate with the persons from outside for 1 year, in the second period the person can go out or even make a call to his family or relatives but only for 4 months, in the third period the person from the program can visit their parents but only for 48 hours and the last period is referring to the social reintegration in the community of that person.

This mobility also included daily work sessions where each country had to show how they picked the beneficiaries for this project, how they started to work with them regarding the social competences acquired, the self-esteem topic and so on.

We also made few possible proposals for the project in order to improve the present transnational cooperation and also we discussed about some future projects. We settled that next mobility organized in Romania,on 26039 October, 2009.

We also visited the Interrogation Ward from Siauliai in order to see the penitentiary system from there and the way they are working for the inmates reintegration.

The program included besides the work sessions, visits the well known touristic places like: Crosses Hill and beer factory “Gubernija”.

In the forth day of the program we visited the Penitentiary from Marijanpole where we found more about the local penitentiary system and their social work with the inmates.

The inmates have the possibility to work in a metal factory and they get payed for the work.

At the same time they have creation places where they can make wood objects and even paintings. The penitentiary from Marijanpole has also an IT room where the inmates can learn to use the PC.

We were invited to “Mano Guru”, a a salad bar in Vilnius. The employees of this bar are persons that used drugs, who came here and received a place where to stay, a payed job and the possibility to reintegrate into the society. The persons are involved in the “12 steps” program that changed their perspective on life. Being payed for their work they have the opportunity to continue their studies and to have some work experience.
