The end of Grundtvig program: Having a New Dynamic Life through Employment

The Having a New Dynamic Life through Employment Grundtvig project realized in cooperation with a school from Spain, a penitentiary from Portugal and a NGO from Lithuania, intended to develop rehabilitation strategies for our target group to acquire communication, social skills and vocational skills which should enable them to access to a new personal, familiar, social and work life and create tools that would guide the teachers and staff.

The developed projected proposed itself to implement strategies with the goal of elaborating a rehabilitation/reinsertion program for inmates and ex-inmates. Established objectives in partnership application are considered to have been reached.

1. To implement rehabilitation strategies in partner countries for inmates/former inmates and to help the learners find their own goals for a future active life: work, social and family.

At the end of the program participants had increase the communication abilities; exercise the conflict resolution technique; increase the anger management; learn the problem solving system; identify personal goals for the future; develop self- confidence; find the possible solutions to the main problems after release; learn a range of information on the procedure for finding a job; have developed and practiced skills to participate in a job interview.

2. Collect information, analyze and debate the best professional practices in these institutions in the direction of improving service quality. During all four motilities we discuss and compare strategies and practice in the domain of ex-inmates rehabilitation. Also we visit penitentiaries from all four countries and compare the prison system and the resources that inmates had after release. Some of the information we have had received during motilities meeting were written in the Good practice manual. This useful tool creates the guide line for developing a good program in the domain of rehabilitation.

3. Develop a good cooperation between prison systems and local communities organizations.

We managed to bring together at the same table most of the actors involved in the matter of the reintegration of inmates. We found out the types of activities everyone makes and decided to have a partnership together in future. We have even talked about the idea of creating a Federation to include all who work in the field of social reintegration of inmates, an idea that hopefully, will soon become a reality.

Our target group consisted of inmates, former inmates and unemployed people.

We intended to reach our aims mainly through: - training sessions for both learners and teachers or staff involved;

- interchange of best practices regarding rehabilitation;

- cooperation between involved institutions;

- design a best practice manual, a resource guide and a personal portfolio (download the resource guide [rar file])

- meetings with local employers, staff from penitentiary, other organizations, private people who would offer support, organizations who can offer shelter and counseling, creating a network of resources for people who leave prison.

The partner institutions developed these strategies according to their own real social context, by adapting the general project purposes and sharing their experiences with the rest of the partners through motilities: interchange and evaluation sessions.
