Motto: In the land of ignorance, the evil must reveal its darkest face so that the men can see the good.
The project started in January 2007 and it was a collaboration between rescue Foundation represented by one of its volunteers- Fazakas Matyas who graduated The Television and Theatre faculty, specialized in Theatre Directing and the Re-education Department in Aid Penitentiary. The project started as a request of the inmates to be part of the theatre play written by one of the inmates in Aiud Penitentiary. The theme of the play was remorse, the inner change. The text of the play has a simple composition but its value is its originality. We organized in a team of 7 inmates and we worked on the theatre play from February to July. The story takes place in a cell, inside of prison where the chief of the cell, after drinking a special made coffee, has a dream where his cell mate are also involved as demons, angels (consciousness) and priest, all of then fighting to have authority upon the inmate. After they confess their sins the priest and the angel (consciousness) manage to cast away the demon. The chief of the cell awakes from the weird dream and tells his colleagues what he understood about the second chance and changing. He invites his mates to go regularly to church and to participate to the re-education programs.
The groups and personal development
During our project they all had to write a rehearsal journal, their impressions, their thoughts related to the process of change. They had to build relationships in the group, to discuss personal opinions, to debate ideas abut rehabilitation, moral values, how people relate. Each of them had to build a character that will transmit a personal message about them. Most of the situations in the theatre play were created by inmates; the director only helped them in building the theatre show.
The show
The first theatre show took place in 17 July in Aiud Penitentiary. Our guests were a team from Rescue Foundation: volunteers, collaborators, financers of the foundation from Denmark and a reporter from the Voice of Gospel Radio. From Aid Penitentiary we invited the staff of the Re-education department, teachers from the school inside of the penitentiary, inmates. It was interesting to see the reactions of the other inmates who could recognize a certain language, a typical relationship between inmates in the cell, relationship with the guards or the priest, and also the problems that were presented on the scene. For the people in the community the contact with the theatre play was sudden, shocking, many of them understanding the real face of being imprisoned only now. It was interested how they understood how inmates see their life behind the bars.
For us the implementation of this project was a great success. We managed to reach our objectives: to create group relationships and theatrical skills that can help inmates have a non formal communication with the community, but also to build the concept of rehabilitation and changing and the most important- to remind their value as human beings.
Our future plan is to manage to present the theatre play in the community in Aid and Clue and then to participate in the theatre festival in penitentiaries.
We thank all the people that were involved in the project for their work, especially to Matyas Fazakas- the director of the play.
