The end of the program ”Strong Men in Tough Times” in Aiud Prison

            In the period October – March 2012 we realised in Aiud Penitentiary, the course “Strong Men in Tough Times”. The program was organized by Rescue’s volunteer Lawrence Daniel Isaac supported by the Association of Christian Men in Romania. 
            On 14th of March 2012, at the last meeting from this program, we had realised a celebration meeting for closing of the program, where together with participants have had a a cake and a juice. We gave participants participation diploma, Christian literature, notebooks and pens as a gratitude for their effort to participate at the whole program

 

Prison between hope and devastation

“Prison between hope and devastation” is the program that Rescue Humanitarian Foundation begins in Arad Prison, the women section starting May 2011.

Starting a new course “Strong Men in Tough Times” in Aiud Prison

 

In October 2011 Rescue Humanitarian Foundation start the second program "Strong Men in Tough Time" in prison Aiud with a new group of 10 offenders.
This program helps the inmates in terms of moral development and the promotion of moral values ​​that give the man character’s strength. The program came  in support of inmates for a rediscovery man's attributes, promoting responsibility, moral values ​​and ideals.
The program is shaped like a study group base on the book written by Edwin Luis Cole " Strong Men in  Tough Times ". The program follows the theme of the book, each chapter treats one important aspect in the everyday life of a man who wants to succeed in life.
By studying this book, participants had the opportunity to discover weaknesses in character and behavior and are challenged to shape their personality, to overcome deceptive philosophies and bring back stability, hope and dignity into society where  needs  man who will become strong in the true sense of the word.


 

Teenagers from Cluj Napoca visit Gherla Penitentiary

On February 26 Humanitarian Rescue Foundation in collaboration with School Nicolae Titulescu Cluj Napoca and Gherla Penitentiary organized a visit of a group of 23 students from VIII grades, Ms director, psychologist and teachers from Nicolae Titulescu School in Gherla Penitentiary. The visit is part of the prevention of juvenile delinquency among students. We wanted that this visit to give students the opportunity to make contact with the prison.

Prevention of juvenile delinquency at school Nicolae Titulescu Cluj Napoca

Continuing the collaboration started last year between our foundation and Nicolae Titulescu School in Cluj-Napoca in February 2010 we organized an activity to prevent delinquency in gym room of Nicolae Titulescu School. In this activity students attended the classes VII and VIII, voucher with teachers and school psychologist Lorena Muresan. From Rescue Humanitarian Foundation participated psychologist Horea Nistor. In 27 march 2009, the Humanitarian Fundation Rescue with the personnel of the Aiud Penitentiary met and done an activity at Rescue center for the teenagers from Aiud Penitentiary.

At the begining of Novermber, Rescue Humanitarian Foundation Cluj-Napoca, made an agreement with Nicolae Titulescu School, to inform the adolescents regarding the steps they are advised to take when taking a decision, to present the advantages of this way of thinking and also to highlight the effects of a decision taken too easely, all of these with the purpose to prevent the delinquences among students.

• In 17th of June, 2008 we started together with Gherla Penitentiary the program "Thinking for a change". This program has as target group 20 inmate women divide in two groups.
The program "Thinking for a change" is a psychotherapeutic program created by Glick, Bush and Tayman from National Institute of Correction in 1997. The philosophy behind this program is cognitive behavioral paradigm. This paradigm claim that our thought, believes and attitude cause our emotions and our behavior. In according to this, the way we perceive and evaluate external situation influence our emotional and behavioral output. The cognitive behavioral paradigm involves teaching the link between thought, emotion and behavior and the way we can change emotion and behavior by changing our thought.

• The objectives of The Grundtvig Project, C.E.E.US - Communication – Education – Empowerment Unites Societies are to promote the active citizenship. Our presumption is that people with special needs do not have access to a proper education so that they acquire the social skills needed for social adaptation. Through our project we aim at endowing the beneficiaries with those skills required for personal and professional development. English language knowledge, computer skills, the growth of self esteem, exchanges and sharing knowledge will be developed through interpersonal communication. During the motilities we look forward that the beneficiaries experience the direct communication, the intercultural exchange and self-growth.

• On 2008 March 13, has been started, in collaboration with the Aiud Penitentiary, a social reintegration program for young people and women in detention in this penitentiary.
The first activity in this program, "The Personality", took place at the Rescue Foundation's head office. The target group of this activity consisted of young people and teenagers from the Aiud Penitentiary. These youngsters were accompanied by Mr. Tia Ioan, member of the Educational Service of the above mentioned penitentiary.

• In 2007 Rescue Foundation initiated a collaboration with Alcoholics Anonymous Community in Clue to develop together a project in Gherla Maximum Security Prison.











•In order to reduce the effects of the difficult situation which the persons, held in detention lives in, and as well to carry on activities aimed to give emotional support, and activities that favour the social insertion, Humanitarian Rescue Foundation, at the initiative of Educational Service from Aiud Penitentiary, proposed an activity aimed at encouraging the artistic creation.

The end of the program ”Strong Men in Tough Times” in Arad Prison

            In the period July - December 2011 we realised in Arad Penitentiary, the course “Strong Men in Tough Times”. The program was organized by Rescue’s volunteers Raul Jurca and Beni Pop from Adoram Church Arad, in collaboration with the Arad Penitentiary and supported by the Association of Christian Men in Romania. 
            On 13th of December 2011, at the last meeting from this program, we had realised a celebration meeting for closing of the program, where together with participants have had an hour of fellowship, followed by serving a cake and a juice. We gave participants Christian literature as a gratitude for their effort to participate at the whole program.

 

The end of book collection campaign  for offender from outside Romania

 

               Rescue Humanitarian Foundation made ​​in the period June-October 2011 book collection campaign called " Book from  home " aimed at provision eucational materials and books to prisons from European countries where commit sentence people of Romanian nationality and facilitating their access to educational materials and books in Romanian language.
            According to officials in prisons in European countries are detaine for more than 13,000 people. In prisons the number of foreign books, materials and programs in Romanian language is very low. Educational materials and books collected during this campaign we hope to contribute to raising the level of education and culture of this peoples. We know that a better educated person can adapt better in society and can be more useful to society of origin.
            We managed to collect in this program over 3,000 volumes of books and educational materials that we began to distribute in prison in Denmark and Italy. In the future we plan  to distribute to other prisons in European countries.

Participated at Preparatory visit in Italy

Ending of counseling program for inmates with sex abuse penalty in
Aiud Prison

From March to September 2011 Rescue Humanitarian Foundation has
developed a psychological counseling program in Aiud Prison for a group of
people in detention in the maximum security section who have committed facts with
sexual connotations. The program included individual and group meetings each
week with a total length of about 6 months.

The end of the programme “Prison between hope and devastation”

On 3rd  August, 2011 in Arad Penitentiary, we had the last meeting in the programme "Prison between hope and crushing" made ​​with  45 women deprived of their liberty. The meeting was a festive one, woman were  rewarded for  their  effort and perseverance showed during the program, each receiving a degree of excellence and Christian literature. Also, it  was a good time for testimonies and fellowship serving a cake and a glass of juice.

Social and labor market integration of inmates

The reintegration of the people who were in prison is a taboo subject for many people. Even though multiple efforts are being made, the state institutions have limited resources, which cannot cover the needs of this social group. In 2008, there were released from the Romanian prisons approximately 11.000 inmates and according to the balance sheet of the Administration of National Penitentiaries from 2008, 5000 of them are recidivists. Finishing the project”Communication-Education Empowerment Unite Society”

Rescue Foundation has organized on Tuesday 4th of August 2009 the closing event for the Bilateral European Cooperation program for life-long learning called “Communication-Education Empowerment Unite Society”. The festivity was held at Rescue Foundation’s headquarters on 4 Fabricii Street Cluj-Napoca between 11 am and 1pm and at this event took part this project’s beneficiaries (seven beneficiaries) and represenatives of other Romanian NGOs in Cluj-Napoca (Estuar).

First group of women prisoners from Gherla Penitentiary finished the programme „Thinking for a change”

In 24 Marc 2009 we finished the programme „Thinking for a Change”organised in Gherla Penitentiary, Cluj Department, which had as beneficiaries 16 women prisoners.
Last session took place at Humanitarian Fundation Rescue, here 9 women from 16 included in the programme were present at the meeting whose objective was the results evaluation and the festive closure of the programme.

Information program of domestic violence in Gherla Penitentiary

During February- July 2008, Rescue Humanitarian Foundation unfolded a program aimed to inform the inmate women of the domestic violence in the penitentiary from Gherla.
The program was funded by Kingdom of the Netherlands Embassy in Bucharest, through the bilateral cooperation program MATRA-KAP and accomplished in cooperation with the penitentiary from Gherla, with Artemis Center – a counseling center against the sexual abuse and domestic violence, also with Inspectoratul Judetean de Politie Cluj-Napoca, Compartimentul de Analiza si Prevenire a Criminalitatii.

Starting from the need of every woman to be useful and the need of self-growth, our foundation in cooperation with Educative service from Aiud Penitentiary we develop a program . Target group of this program were inmate’s woman from Aiud Penitentiary. In 28 May each inmate received from our foundation one flower and a flower pot, a book with relevant information about each flower, a notebook in witch they must note weekly relevant information about her flower evolution.

Between april-may 2008, in Gherla Penitentiary was developed a Staff Traning program for the stuff working in the penitentiary. The Staff Training program was lead by Lynne DeLano - Peace Corps volunteer, and it was based on the curriculum from the Washington Department of Corrections. At the end of the program, a number of 25 participants received an attending certificate.

Woman's Day in Aiud Penitentiary - On the 6th of March 2008, members from "Rescue" Humanitarian Foundation and a group of volunteers have celebrated Woman's day together with the women that are imprisoned at the Penitentiary of Aiud. The theme was "Priceless moments".

Theatrical activity

Between 14th -18th of November 2007, Cosmin Giurgiu, manager of Rescue Humanitarian Foundation has participated to the Grundtvig/Leonardo da Vinci Contact Seminar in Murcia-Spain. The seminar has been organized to offer the participants the possibility to establish contacts and relations with participants from other European countries in order to initiate European Projects.

Rescue Humanitarian Organization organized a visit to Danmark in the period 24 August – 1st September 2007.This was purposed for an experience exchange between the staff of the three penitenciaries visited in Danmark and the two delegations on behalf of the penitenciaries in Aiud and Arad from Romania.

The rehabilitation program
“Thinking for a change”

The rehabilitation program “Thinking for a Change” was implemented in Aiud Penitentiary with two groups of people in detention, men and women. The program had weekly meetings for about 5 months. On Thursday, the 12 of April all the participants to this program were celebrated and we offered them participation certificates.

Rescue Foundation celebrated Women’s day in Aiud Penitentiary, a traditional event for the two institutions. The theme we choused was: ”The story of my life” and the message we wanted to transmit was about changes in our lives. There are a few things we have to take into consideration when we decide that it’s time to make changes in our lives: we have to understand what we did wrong, we have to accept that there is a mistake in out past and we have to know to ask for help.

In 8-12 November 2006 in Bilzen-Belgium, Rescue Foundation participated to a preparatory visit for a Grundtvig II project, organized by Romanian National Agency for Community Programs in the Field of Education and Vocational Training.

The name of the project we decided to implement together with our partners from Latvia and Sweden is CEE US – Comunication Education Empowerment Unites Societies.

"Rescue and inmates - partners in parenting - Our main purpose is to enhance the parenting skills of women inmates with the belief that inmates, in all probability are lacking in suitable parenting behaviors prior to incarceration.

“Change from the inside out” campaign was set up by Rescue Humanitarian Foundation in collaboration with Aventa Media SRL Brasov in 2006, as a response to the big request of books in penitentiaries. The first step was organizing the campaign at local level, the books being distributed to the penitentiaries from Aiud and Arad, where the foundation has had activities. The results of this campaign were good, and at the suggestions of “Psihologia azi” magazine, we decided to continue the campaign at a national level, in the most of the big cities, being in partnership.


In June 2006 Rescue Foundation, Donation Denmark –Romania and Apostolic Church in Kolding organized an exchange experience in Denmark. The purpose of this visit was to establish contacts with penitentiaries in Denmark and to discuss working methods specific to social reintegration issue.

The “Genuine manhood- a guide for the family life” project.


“The moral principles of Democracy”. This project contains courses and exchange experience between Romania and Denmark and has, as the main goal , comparing the actualization of democracy in these two countries, within several institutions:
  1. The detention system
  2. The judicial system
  3. The educational system
  4. The health system
  5. The news media
  6. The local administration
There were as participants:
  • The General Department of Penitentiaries from Bucharest, Slobozia, Craiova, Aiud. There were also chiefs of anticorruption institutions, magistrates from Alba-Iulia, judges, prosecutors, lawyers, prison officers and petty officers.
  • Teachers from both „Bogdan-Voda” University in Baia Mare and „ 1-th Decembrie 1918” in Alba- Iulia.( in collaboration with Danish- Romanian Consulting, through the danish Democratic Fund.).
  • The physicians of „ I.Chiricuta” Institute from Cluj Napoca, who were involved in a training on the theme:” the patients in their final degree of illness”.
  • The mayors, the employees of the urban department in Gherla, Apahida, Cluj Napoca.
  • Leaders of different institutions, ONGs.
  • High school students and college students.

As guests from Denmark: Thorsten si Urte Hvidt- Mr Thorsten was a lawyer from the Justice Suprem Danish Court, Knud Simon Christensen- journalist and vice president of Independent Journalists Association; Keld Jorgensen – historian, honorary president of „ The Moral Re- Armament” Association.

Activities made by the danish guests:

  • presentations and disscutions with the students of: „ Bogdan-Voda” University in Baia Mare, „ 1-th December 1918 „ University in Alba-Iulia, „ Babes-Bolyai” University in Cluj Napoca. They also lectured to The General Department of Penitentiaries in Aiud, Gherla, and in the Court of Low in Cluj Napoca.
  • in collaboration with the „ Moral Rearmament” Association, Rescue Foundation organized visits and discussions to the Magistrature National Institute and to the General Prosecutor's Office in Bucharest. The purpose of these debates was the founding of the Romanian-Danish Jurist Association.


The participating to the Coux Conference, the theme's conferences was „ Inter-ethnical reconciliation”, where Rescue members , together with two romanian anti-corruption prosecutors, lectured on the detention system in Romania.

The memorable visit to the Majesty King Michael the First and his wife, Majesty Queen Ana of Bourbon- Parma. The most debated theme of the evening was the judicial system in Romania.

The meeting with the ex- president of the Red Cross International Movement with headquarters in Swiss. The discussions were about the possibilities of ONGs involvement in social rehabilitation of the people behind bars.

With the help and financial support of the Romanian artist Ioan Nemtoi the translation and the publication of the book „Daily lecture” by J.R. Miller finally came into being. This book was distributed in 4350 samples to penitentiaries all over the country : Aiud, Slobozia, Baia-Mare, Gherla, Cluj- Napoca.

In collaboration with “Moral Re-Armament” the brochure „The Moral Principles of Democracy” was translated into Romanian language. This booklet was assimilated by the Danish army in order to implement the democratic principles among the soldiers.

In collaboration with “Moral Re-Armament” the book „Changing Initiatives”, writen by the well-known historian Keld Jorgensen, was translated into Romanian language.
